EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image depicts the final moments of Jan Hus, a Bohemian religious leader and reformer, as he stands before his accusers, defiant and unyielding, prior to being burnt at the stake for heresy on July 6, 1415. Hus, a prominent figure in the early Czech Reformation, was a vocal critic of the corruption and excesses of the Roman Catholic Church and a champion of the Czech language and national identity. Despite his denials of heresy and repeated attempts at reconciliation with the Church, Hus was condemned as a heretic and sentenced to be burned alive. In this print, Hus is shown wearing a long, fur-lined robe and holding a stack of books, symbolizing his commitment to learning and the written word. The ominous backdrop of the pyre and the ominous figure of Du Chemin, the executioner, add to the sense of impending doom. Hus's tragic end served as a rallying cry for the Hussite movement, which would continue to challenge the authority of the Church in Bohemia and beyond for decades to come.
