EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative lantern slide image presents a distant view of the settlement of Newcastle in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica, taken from an opposite hillside around the turn of the 20th century. Newcastle, an historic military centre in Jamaica, is nestled among the lush greenery of the mountainside. Established in the 1840s, Newcastle played a significant role in Jamaica's military history. The buildings, with their red-tiled roofs, can be seen scattered across the hillside, creating an intriguing juxtaposition against the natural backdrop. Jamaica, an island nation located in the Caribbean Sea, is officially known as the Commonwealth of Jamaica. Situated south of Cuba and west of Hispaniola, the island is part of the Greater Antilles. Newcastle's unique history and picturesque setting have made it a popular destination for tourists and historians alike. This photograph, part of the Boswell Collection, Slide number 26, offers a glimpse into the rich history and natural beauty of Jamaica during the 1920s.
