HMS Vindictive at Ostend, Belgium, WW1

View of HMS Vindictive, an Arrogant-class protected cruiser, after the Zeebrugge Raid (23 April 1918), Belgium, when her upperworks were badly damaged by gunfire. Seen here at Ostend, where she had been sunk as a blockship during the Second Ostend Raid (10 May 1918). The Zeebrugge and Ostend Raids gave the ship celebrity, and her bow section has been preserved in Ostend harbour as a lasting memorial. Date: 14 May 1918

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the damaged hulk of HMS Vindictive, a Protected Cruiser of the Arrogant class, moored in Ostend harbor, Belgium, following the Second Ostend Raid on May 10, 1918. The Vindictive gained notoriety after her participation in the daring Zeebrugge Raid on April 23, 1918, when she successfully blocked the entrance to the port of Zeebrugge with other British warships, preventing the German navy from using it as a base. In this photograph, the upperworks of the Vindictive are clearly visible, bearing the scars of the intense gunfire she endured during the raid. After the successful blockade of Zeebrugge, the Vindictive was towed to Ostend and deliberately scuttled to serve as a blockship. The strategic positioning of these sunken vessels was intended to obstruct the entrance to the harbor and hinder the German navy's ability to launch attacks against Allied forces. The Vindictive's bow section remains preserved in Ostend harbor as a poignant reminder of the bravery and determination of the Allied forces during World War 1. The Zeebrugge and Ostend Raids were significant naval operations that played a crucial role in the war effort, and the Vindictive's participation in these events cemented her place in history. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the resilience and heroism of the British Royal Navy during a time of great conflict.
