Three German medallions (2 of 2), WW1
Three German medallions from the First World War. At the top is a large round medallion bearing the words: Gott Strafe England (May God Punish England) 18 Februar 1915, with Neptune sitting on a submarine, watching a sinking ship and shaking his fist (a comment on British attacks in the English Channel on German ships and U-boats). Below is a smaller round medallion bearing the date 1914, showing an allegorical female figure representing Peace, hovering above soldiers firing their weapons on a battlefield. At the bottom is an oval medallion bearing the words: Der Lugenfeldzug des Vierverbands (The Campaign of Lies by the Quadruple Alliance) 1914, showing an allegorical figure representing Lies or Untruth, blowing a trumpet and riding in a chariot (representing a victory procession to Berlin, Vienna and Constantinople) over the heads of German soldiers, distributing leaflets which read: Germany on the point of starvation, Rheims Cathedral in ruins, end of the barbarians, revolution in Berlin. (2 of 2) Date: 1914-1915

EDITORS COMMENTS
This trio of medallions serves as a poignant reminder of the turbulent events that unfolded during the First World War. The top medallion, with its large diameter, bears the inscription "Gott Strafe England" (May God Punish England) and the date "18 Februar 1915." The striking image of Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, is depicted sitting atop a submarine, watching a sinking ship and raising his fist. This powerful symbolism reflects the German response to British attacks in the English Channel on their ships and U-boats. Beneath the top medallion lies a smaller round medallion, which displays the date "1914" and an allegorical figure representing Peace. The peaceful goddess hovers above soldiers engaged in battle, their weapons raised, symbolizing the hope for an end to the violence that was tearing Europe apart. At the bottom of the medallions, an oval medallion bears the inscription "Der Lugenfeldzug des Vierverbands" (The Campaign of Lies by the Quadruple Alliance) and the date "1914." The image on this medallion depicts an allegorical figure representing Lies or Untruth, blowing a trumpet and riding in a chariot over the heads of German soldiers. The chariot is adorned with banners bearing the false messages that were spread during the war, such as "Germany on the point of starvation," "Rheims Cathedral in ruins," "end of the barbarians," and "revolution in Berlin." These evocative medallions, which date from 1914-1915, offer a compelling visual representation of the complex and often misrepresented realities of the First World War. Their intricate design and powerful symbolism continue to captivate and inspire interest in the history of this pivotal period.
