EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Gabriel Derzhavin: A Russian Writer and Statesman of the 18th Century". This portrait depicts Gabriel Derzhavin (1743-1816), a prominent figure in Russian history as both a celebrated writer and a distinguished statesman. Born on November 14, 1743, in the village of Staritsa, near Tver, Derzhavin's literary talents were discovered at a young age. He began writing poetry in his teens and continued to produce works throughout his life, earning him a place among the greatest Russian poets. Derzhavin's political career began in 1769 when he was appointed as a secretary to Catherine the Great. He served in various government positions, including the Senate and the College of Foreign Affairs. In 1796, he became a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Derzhavin's political acumen and loyalty to the Russian monarchy were recognized when he was appointed as a Privy Councilor in 1798 and as a Senator in 1802. Derzhavin's literary contributions are renowned for their depth, beauty, and originality. He is best known for his poetic masterpieces, such as "The Battle of Borodino," "The Fountain," and "The Dream." His works were influenced by classical Greek and Roman literature, as well as the natural beauty of the Russian landscape. Derzhavin's poetry was also marked by a profound sense of spirituality and a deep connection to the Russian people. Despite his many accomplishments, Derzhavin remained humble and dedicated to serving his country. He died on February 18, 1816, in Saint Petersburg, leaving behind a rich literary legacy and a lasting impact on Russian culture. This portrait, taken in the late 18th or early 19th century, captures the intellectual and artistic brilliance of a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge and the betterment of his nation.
