EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, created by the renowned Dutch artist Frans Fransen II (1581-1642), depicts a poignant moment from the biblical narrative of Hagar and the Angel in Genesis, chapter 16, verses 7-14. In this scene, Hagar, the Egyptian slave woman, is shown as a fugitive in the desert, having been cast out by her mistress Sarah. Despairing and exhausted, Hagar lies beneath the burning sun, her child Ishmael at her side. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appears to her, bringing relief and hope. The angel touches Hagar's elbow with his right hand, gesturing towards a nearby well, assuring her that God had heard her cries and that her family would be provided for. With newfound strength, Hagar rises and leads her son to the well, where they find water and are saved from certain death. Frans Fransen II masterfully captures the emotional intensity of this biblical tale, using chiaroscuro lighting and intricate detail to bring the figures to life. This historical print, created in 1642, is a testament to the artist's skill and his deep understanding of the human condition.
