EDITORS COMMENTS
Emperor Washkar Inka, also known as Huascar Inca or Tupac Cusi Huallpar, is depicted in this 16th-century portrait. Born in 1493, Washkar Inka was the eldest son of Inca Emperor Huayna Capac and his sister-wife, Cusi Coyllur. Upon his father's death in 1527, Washkar Inka and his younger brother Atahualpa were declared co-rulers of the Inca Empire, with their territories divided between them. However, their peaceful co-rule was short-lived. In 1529, Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro arrived in Peru, leading a small expedition that would ultimately conquer the Inca Empire. Washkar Inka and Atahualpa initially sent diplomatic missions to the Spanish, but as the Spanish continued to expand their territories, tensions between the brothers grew. In 1532, the two brothers went to war over control of the empire, with Washkar Inka leading the forces in the north and Atahualpa in the south. Despite initial successes, Washkar Inka was ultimately defeated by Atahualpa's larger and better-equipped forces. Washkar Inka retreated to the fortress of Chimborazo, where he was besieged by Atahualpa's army. In 1533, Washkar Inka surrendered to Pizarro, who had learned of Atahualpa's capture and was marching to confront him. Washkar Inka was taken to Spain as a prisoner, where he died in 1536. This portrait of Washkar Inka is a poignant reminder of the last days of the Inca Empire and the complex political dynamics that played out during the Spanish conquest. The intricately patterned clothing and regal bearing of the emperor suggest his high status and the power he once wielded. Despite the tragic outcome of his reign, Washkar Inka remains an important figure in the history of the Inca civilization and the broader history of the Americas.
