The Coronation Chair with the Stone of Scone

The Coronation Chair, Westminster Abbey, London. The stone below the seat is the infamous Stone of Scone. Historically, the artifact was kept at the now-ruined Scone Abbey in Scone, near Perth, Scotland. It was used for centuries in the coronation of the monarchs of Scotland, the monarchs of England, and, more recently, British monarchs. On 3 July 1996 it was announced in the House of Commons that the Stone would be returned to Scotland, and on 15 November 1996, after a handover ceremony at the border between representatives of the Home Office and of the Scottish Office, it was transported to Edinburgh Castle arriving on 30 November 1996 where it remains. Date: circa 1910s

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Coronation Chair, a historic symbol of monarchical power and destiny, is depicted in this early 1900s photograph from Westminster Abbey, London. The chair, which dates back to the 13th century, has been the seat of choice for the coronation of English and British monarchs for centuries. The ancient Stone of Scone, also known as the Stone of Destiny, lies hidden beneath the chair's seat. Historically, this stone was kept at Scone Abbey in Scotland and was used in the coronation of Scottish monarchs as well. In 1996, after centuries of controversy and debate, the Stone was returned to its native Scotland. The announcement was made in the House of Commons, and a handover ceremony was held at the border between representatives of the Home Office and the Scottish Office. The Stone was then transported to Edinburgh Castle, where it remains to this day. This photograph captures a glimpse into the rich history and ancient traditions of the British monarchy.
