EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Sir Charles Montague Lush (1853-1930), an esteemed English judge, as he sits in his chambers adorned in the traditional robes and wig of the legal profession. The image, taken in 1911, showcases Lush's serious and authoritative demeanor, as he gazes intently over a stack of legal documents. Born in London, Lush was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, before embarking on a distinguished legal career. He was called to the bar in 1878 and became a Queen's Counsel in 1895. In 1904, he was appointed as a judge of the High Court of Justice, a position he held until his retirement in 1923. Lush's tenure on the bench was marked by his fairness and impartiality. He was known for his clear and concise judgments, which were often delivered with great eloquence. One of his most notable cases involved the landmark decision in the case of Donoghue v Stevenson, which established the principle of negligence in English law. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the world of the English legal system during a bygone era. The traditional attire of the wig and robes, which have been worn by judges for centuries, add to the historical significance of the image. Sir Charles Montague Lush's legacy as a respected and influential judge continues to be felt in the legal profession to this day.
