EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the esteemed French military commander and statesman, Nicolas Anne Theodule Changarnier (1793-1877), during his tenure as a general in the French army. Changarnier's military career began during the tumultuous period of the French Revolution, and he quickly rose through the ranks due to his strategic acumen and unwavering loyalty to the Republic. Born on October 25, 1793, in the town of Châteaudun, Changarnier initially served as an officer in the National Guard before joining the regular army in 1812. He distinguished himself in several battles during the Napoleonic Wars, including the Battle of Waterloo, where he commanded a brigade under Marshal Ney. However, Changarnier's greatest achievements came during the Second French Empire, when he served under Napoleon III. He played a crucial role in the conquest of Italy and the Crimean War, and was later appointed as the Governor-General of Algeria in 1857. Despite his military successes, Changarnier was also a respected statesman. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly and the Senate, and served as Minister of War under Napoleon III from 1863 to 1866. Changarnier's tenure as Minister of War was marked by his efforts to modernize the French military and improve its readiness for war. This striking image of Changarnier, dressed in the uniform of a French general, captures the essence of a man who dedicated his life to serving his country in both military and political capacities. His legacy as a military commander and statesman continues to be celebrated in French history.
