EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the young and determined face of Captain Charles de Gaulle during his service in the French Army during the First World War. Born on November 22, 1890, in Lille, France, de Gaulle would go on to become one of the most iconic figures in French history. At the outbreak of the First World War in 1814, de Gaulle, a second lieutenant in the 135th Infantry Regiment, was among the first to answer the call to arms. In this image, taken during the war years, he is seen in his military uniform, exuding a sense of authority and resolve that would come to define his leadership style. De Gaulle's military career during the First World War was marked by a series of promotions and distinguished service. He was wounded twice and decorated for his bravery. However, it was his experience in the trenches and his observations of military strategy that would shape his future military and political career. After the war, de Gaulle left the military to pursue a career in politics. He would go on to serve as the leader of the Free French Forces during the Second World War, and later become the President of the French Republic from 1959 to 1969. De Gaulle's leadership during these tumultuous periods helped to restore French pride and sovereignty, making him a revered figure in French history. This photograph is a poignant reminder of de Gaulle's humble beginnings as a young captain in the French Army during the First World War. It captures the spirit of a man who would go on to become a symbol of French resistance and resilience.
