On board the luxury liner, L Atlantique, the central stree

On board the French luxury liner, L Atlantique. A unusual feature at the time, the central street of shops, over 150 meters long, with the spacious embarkation hall. Fire broke out on the L Alantiique in the early hours of 4th January 1933, at 6am the abandon ship order was given. The liner had no passengers on board, only crew, many were picked up in the British steamer, Ford Castle. One lifeboat was thrown into the sea, drowning some of the occupants. For hours the burning liner drifted, the terrific heat prevented slavage crafts from approaching. Eventually a French ship securred a line and brought her into Cherbourg

EDITORS COMMENTS
On Board the French Luxury Liner, L Atlantique: A Unique Shopping Experience Gone Wrong in 1933 This evocative photograph captures the central street of shops on board the French luxury liner, L Atlantique, stretching over 150 meters long and boasting a spacious embarkation hall. An unusual feature at the time, this commercial area offered passengers a unique shopping experience before they set sail on their voyages. However, the history of the L Atlantique is not one of luxury and leisure. On the morning of 4th January 1933, at around 6am, a fire broke out on the ship. With no passengers on board, only the crew were on site. At daybreak, the abandon ship order was given, and many crew members were picked up by the British steamer, Ford Castle. Tragically, one lifeboat was thrown into the sea, resulting in the drowning of some occupants. For hours, the burning liner drifted in the sea, with the terrific heat preventing salvage crafts from approaching. Eventually, a French ship secured a line and brought the L Atlantique into Cherbourg. This historical photograph is a poignant reminder of the L Atlantique's tragic end, which occurred on the 14th of January 1933. The ship, which had no passengers on board at the time, was unable to escape the devastating effects of the fire. The central street of shops, once a bustling hub of activity, now stands as a testament to the past, a chilling reminder of the unexpected dangers that can lurk even on the most luxurious of vessels.
