EDITORS COMMENTS
This print commemorates the second historic balloon ascent by the Robert brothers, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and Marquis d'Arlandes, along with their passengers, the Duke of Chartres and the Count of la Vaupalière, from the picturesque Parc de St Cloud in Paris on July 15, 1784. The image captures the moment just before takeoff, with the elegant hot air balloon, adorned with the fleur-de-lys crest of the French monarchy, poised against the backdrop of a clear summer sky filled with billowing clouds. The aristocrats, dressed in their finest attire, are shown confidently boarding the basket, surrounded by an excited crowd of onlookers. The successful ascent marked a significant milestone in human transportation and aviation history, as it was the first time that a manned flight lasted long enough to cross a significant distance, traveling approximately 25 kilometers (16 miles) from St Cloud to the Parc de Meudon, near the Etang de la Garenne. The event became a symbol of French innovation and progress during the 1780s, and the image of the balloon ascending into the sky remains an enduring symbol of human curiosity and the quest for new frontiers.
