EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, a German pilot stands proudly next to his Fokker E-I / 1 Eindecker monoplane, a formidable fighter aircraft of the early 1910s. The image captures the essence of the nascent military aviation era, as the German Air Service, or Luftstreitkräfte, prepared for the challenges of the impending war. The Fokker E-I, also known as the Eindecker or "Monoplane" due to its single-wing design, was a pioneering aircraft that revolutionized the world of military aviation. Designed by Dutch engineer Anthony Fokker and produced in Germany, this biplane was the first fighter aircraft to be equipped with synchronizers, allowing the pilot to fire through the propeller arc without the risk of hitting the blades. This particular Fokker E-I, with the registration numbers V 11 D.VII, D.VII, or D.VII D 7, was a later variant of the original Eindecker. Powered by a 115 horsepower Mercedes D.III engine, it boasted an impressive top speed of 118 kilometers per hour (73 miles per hour). The aircraft was armed with a fixed, forward-firing Spandau LMG 08/15 machine gun, which could deliver devastating firepower to enemy targets. The photograph, taken in the 1910s, showcases the pilot's determination and the technological prowess of the German military during this period. The Fokker E-I would go on to see extensive combat during World War I, becoming a symbol of German air superiority and a testament to the ingenuity of its designers and pilots. This image, with its rich historical significance, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the skies were a new and exciting frontier for warfare.
