EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the aftermath of an assassination attempt on the life of King Alfonso XIII of Spain on his wedding day, May 31, 1906, in Paris. The Spanish monarch, who reigned from 1886 to 1931, was the target of anarchist Mateu Morral's bombing as he and his bride, Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, rode in an open carriage through the streets of the city. The terrifying explosion, which occurred near the Place des Ternes, left several people dead or injured, including bystanders and members of the royal entourage. The photograph shows the chaotic scene that followed, with victims lying on the ground, dazed and alarmed onlookers, police, and soldiers rushing to the scene to restore order. Horses reared and screamed in fear as the wedding procession came to a sudden halt. The attempt on Alfonso XIII's life was a significant event in Spanish history, highlighting the political instability and violence that plagued the country during this period. This image is a poignant reminder of the terror and chaos that accompanied the attempt to assassinate a monarch on his wedding day.
