EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking image from 1901, Countess Karolina Olszewski, a Polish aristocrat and political provocateur, is depicted aiming a pistol at French statesman Pierre Baudin. The scene captures the moment before the attempted assassination that took place on the streets of Paris. However, it was not Baudin who was the true target of the countess's wrath. Baudin, a French naval officer and politician, was a minor figure in the political landscape of the time. The real object of Olszewski's desire for retribution was Théophile Delcasse, the French Foreign Minister, who was believed to have played a role in the assassination of her husband, General Kazimierz Sosnkowski, in Algiers in 1899. Despite her clear intentions, Olszewski's assassination attempt on Delcasse failed. She fired her pistol at Baudin, mistaking him for her true target, as they both exited the Chamber of Deputies in Paris. Baudin survived the attack with only minor injuries, but the incident caused a political uproar and further strained already tense relations between France and Poland. This photograph, titled "Attack on M. Pierre Baudin by Countess Olszewski," is a testament to the volatile political climate of the early 20th century and the lengths some individuals would go to seek vengeance. The image captures the intense moment of the assassination attempt, with the countess's determined expression and Baudin's surprised reaction, frozen in time. The pistol, smoke, and the chaos of the scene add to the sense of danger and urgency, making this photograph a compelling and historic document of a pivotal moment in European history.
