EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the moment of arrest for one of the most infamous figures in English history: Guy Fawkes. The year was 1605, and Guy Fawkes, a Catholic conspirator, had been planning to blow up the House of Lords in London in an attempt to assassinate King James I and overthrow the Protestant government. The plot was foiled when a tip-off led authorities to search Westminster Palace on the night of November 4. In this print by Sir Thomas Knyvet, we see Guy Fawkes being apprehended by a group of determined men, led by Sir Thomas Knyvet himself. Fawkes, dressed in a simple coat and hat, looks defiant and unyielding as he is surrounded by his captors. The expression on Knyvet's face is one of triumph and relief, as he and his men have successfully thwarted the Gunpowder Plot and saved the king's life. The arrest of Guy Fawkes marked the end of the conspiracy, and the men involved were soon put on trial and executed. The event became a turning point in English history, and the anniversary of the foiled plot is still celebrated to this day as Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night. This print is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a visual representation of a pivotal moment in the history of England and the triumph of the forces of law and order over treason and conspiracy.
