EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of departure for American troops bound for the Western Front during World War I. Taken from an aerial perspective, the photograph shows a long column of US soldiers, clad in their uniforms and carrying their gear, marching through the streets of New York City. The scene is one of bustling activity, with traffic snarled and pedestrians pressed against the pavement to get a glimpse of the passing troops. The American flag flies proudly from a nearby building, a symbol of the nation's unwavering support for its military men and women. The troops, many of whom were volunteering to serve their country, were making their way to the docks to board ships that would carry them across the Atlantic Ocean to France. The Great War was entering its third year, and the United States, which had remained neutral up until that point, had recently entered the conflict in April 1917. This photograph, taken between 1917 and 1918, is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by American soldiers during World War I as they departed from their homes and families to answer the call to duty.
