EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historical significance of Bentley Grange shaft mounds in Denby Dale, West Yorkshire. These impressive earthworks were formed as spoil heaps from a series of pits that were once utilized for iron ore mining during medieval times. The remnants of this ancient industry are beautifully showcased in the aerial perspective captured by photographer Dave MacLeod. Bentley Grange holds great importance as it was one of the properties owned by the renowned Cistercian monastery, Byland Abbey. Historical documents suggest that mining activities at this site ceased around the mid-1400s, making these shaft mounds a fascinating testament to an era long gone. The image highlights the intricate patterns and shapes created by centuries-old extraction techniques. It serves as a reminder of how human ingenuity and labor have shaped our landscapes throughout history. Designated as scheduled monuments, these shaft mounds hold immense archaeological value and contribute to our understanding of medieval iron mining practices in West Yorkshire. This photograph not only showcases their historical significance but also invites viewers to appreciate their aesthetic beauty from above. Dave MacLeod's skillful composition allows us to marvel at this unique blend of nature and human intervention while reminding us of the rich industrial heritage hidden beneath our feet.
