COVENTRY CATHEDRAL, PRIORY STREET, COVENTRY. Looking from the roof of Coventry Cathedral towards a RAF Belvedere helicopter parked on the tarmac below, showing a crowd gathered to watch at the Pool Meadow Bus Station to the north of the cathedral.
The photograph was taken during Operation Rich Man a joint project involving Royal Air Force staff and Laing staff. This involved a RAF Belvedere helicopter hoisting in to place the 80ft bronze spire on to the new cathedral. The part of the operation to lower the 1/2 ton cross that sits on top of the spire had to be postponed due to windy conditions

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment during Operation Rich Man at Coventry Cathedral in the 1960s. From the vantage point of the cathedral's roof, we see a RAF Belvedere helicopter parked on the tarmac below. The bustling crowd gathered at Pool Meadow Bus Station to witness this extraordinary event adds a sense of anticipation and excitement to the scene. Operation Rich Man was an ambitious joint project between Royal Air Force staff and Laing staff, aimed at placing an impressive 80ft bronze spire onto the new cathedral. This photograph specifically documents one phase of the operation, where the helicopter is tasked with hoisting the spire into place. However, due to unfavorable windy conditions, lowering the 1/2 ton cross atop the spire had to be postponed for another day. The image not only showcases significant construction progress but also highlights how different industries collaborated towards a common goal. It symbolizes human ingenuity and determination in creating something remarkable. Preserved by Historic England Archive, this print serves as a testament to Coventry Cathedral's rich history and its enduring impact on architectural achievements. It reminds us of our ability to overcome challenges and unite forces in pursuit of greatness.
