Sutherland or 93 D. c1935

Sutherland or 93 D. c1935. Tartan is a pattern consisting of horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colours. Originally these were simply different regional checked-cloth patterns, chosen by the wearers preference without particular reference to propriety. In the mid-nineteenth century, however, many patterns were created and artificially associated with Scottish clans, families, or institutions. Tartans originated in woven wool, but are now made in many other materials in hundreds of patterns. Scottish kilts almost always have tartan patterns. Tartan is often called plaid in North America. Illustration from a book on Scottish tartans, published c1935

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the timeless beauty of Sutherland or 93 D. c1935 tartan pattern. Tartan, a classic design consisting of horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colors, has a rich history rooted in Scottish culture. Originally, these patterns were chosen based on personal preference rather than any specific meaning or association. However, during the mid-nineteenth century, numerous tartan patterns were created and artificially linked to Scottish clans, families, and institutions. This particular illustration from a book on Scottish tartans published around 1935 captures the essence of this traditional textile art form. Tartans traditionally originated from woven wool but have now expanded to include various other materials and hundreds of unique patterns. It is worth noting that Scottish kilts almost always feature distinct tartan designs. In North America, tartan is often referred to as plaid. The vibrant colors and intricate weaving techniques showcased in this image exemplify the craftsmanship behind this iconic fabric. As we delve into Scotland's heritage through this remarkable photograph print from the early twentieth century (circa 1930s), we are reminded of its cultural significance and enduring appeal across generations.
