EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a page from Sanford Robinson Gifford's sketchbook, specifically page 37 featuring his exquisite Maine Landscape Vignettes. Gifford, an esteemed American landscape painter and member of the second generation of Hudson River school artists, was renowned for his ability to capture the beauty of nature on canvas. The sketchbook accompanied Gifford during his expedition in 1859 to New Hampshire and Maine, where he embarked on annual summer trips to picturesque locations such as the Catskills, Adirondacks, and New England. This particular page reveals his meticulous graphite studies of notable sites including Dixville Notch, White Mountains, and Peaks Island in Casco Bay. Gifford utilized these sketches as a foundation for creating stunning oil paintings back in his studio at the Tenth Street Studio Building in New York City. One noteworthy example is "A Home in the Wilderness" (1866), which demonstrates how he transformed these initial sketches into masterful works of art. Preserved within this bound volume are glimpses into Gifford's artistic process and his deep appreciation for the natural world. The print allows us to admire both the skillful execution of these graphite studies and their significance as sources of inspiration for some of America's most cherished landscape paintings.
