The New Houses of Parliament - Entrance-hall, 1857. Creator: Unknown
The New Houses of Parliament - Entrance-hall, 1857. The entrance-hall has its fireplace, and large five-light window enriched with armorial bearings. The ceiling here will strike the stranger on entering by its richness: a lamp, en suite with the rest, will light this hall at night. A screen of oak, pierced with tracery, with a clock in the centre, and filled with stained glass, divides it from the Peers Private Entrance'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, taken in 1857, showcases the grand entrance-hall of the New Houses of Parliament in London, as it was originally designed. The entrance-hall, adorned with a five-light window enriched with armorial bearings, sets the tone for the neo-Gothic architectural marvel that lies beyond. The fireplace, a traditional feature of English homes, adds to the warmth and inviting nature of the space. The most striking element of the entrance-hall is the richly decorated ceiling, which would leave visitors in awe upon entering. A central clock, encased within an oak screen pierced with tracery, separates the entrance-hall from the Peers' Private Entrance. The ceiling, a masterpiece of fan vaulting, is a testament to the intricate detail and craftsmanship of the Gothic Revival movement, led by architects such as Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin and Sir Charles Barry. The photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1857, provides a glimpse into the past, offering us a glimpse into the political and architectural history of Britain. The New Houses of Parliament, also known as the Palace of Westminster, remains an iconic symbol of the country's rich history and political heritage.
