Les Soirees de Rome: Title Page, 1763-1764. Creator: Hubert Robert (French, 1733-1808)
Les Soirees de Rome: Title Page, 1763-1764. Derived from his own pen-and-ink drawings, this suite of etchings features fictional characters situated near recognizable buildings and statues in Rome. On the title page, Robert dedicated the suite to Marguerite Le Compte, who visited Rome in 1764 in the company of the wealthy author and art enthusiast Claude Henri Watelet. Both Le Compte and Watelet were amateur etchers, and they socialized with a group that included artists and printmakers centered at the academies in Italy. Roberts dedication was likely motivated by the hope of future patronage from Le Compte. She may be the generous woman with a hand muff depicted in The Ancient Temple, the fifth scene in this series

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the title page of "Les Soirees de Rome" created by Hubert Robert, a renowned French artist from the 18th century. Derived from his own pen-and-ink drawings, this suite of etchings transports viewers to the enchanting city of Rome, where fictional characters come alive amidst recognizable landmarks and statues. The dedication on the title page reveals that Robert dedicated this series to Marguerite Le Compte, who had visited Rome in 1764 accompanied by Claude Henri Watelet, a wealthy author and art enthusiast. Both Le Compte and Watelet were amateur etchers themselves and were part of an influential social circle consisting of artists and printmakers associated with Italian academies. It is believed that Robert's dedication was driven by his desire for future patronage from Le Compte. In fact, it is speculated that she may be depicted as the generous woman adorned with a hand muff in one of the scenes titled "The Ancient Temple" which happens to be the fifth scene in this remarkable series. With its intricate details and masterful execution through etching techniques, this print allows us to appreciate Hubert Robert's artistic brilliance while immersing ourselves in the beauty and grandeur of ancient Rome.
