EDITORS COMMENTS
The Lady Adeline, 1847" is a captivating portrait print that showcases the elegance and allure of Adeline Louisa Maria, Countess of Cardigan and Lancastre. Painted by John Henry Robinson, this artwork captures the essence of a woman who defied societal norms and faced scandalous circumstances. Adeline's life was marked by controversy as she became the second wife of English peer James Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan. Queen Victoria herself refused to have her at court due to Cardigan leaving his first wife. However, despite these challenges, Adeline embraced her role as an author and penned scandalous memoirs titled "My Recollections" which were published in 1909. In this monochrome print, we see Adeline looking away with an air of mystery surrounding her. Her intricate hairstyle adorned with a tiara exudes sophistication while emphasizing her aristocratic status. The attention to detail in her dress and jewelry highlights the opulence associated with Victorian-era nobility. This engraving by Alfred Edward Chalon beautifully captures the countess' gracefulness and resilience amidst societal judgment. It serves as a testament to both Adeline's personal strength and artistic talent. As we admire this black-and-white portrayal from Joseph Rogerson's London studio in 1847, we are reminded of the complexities within historical figures like Countess Adeline – their triumphs over adversity and their lasting impact on society through artistry or written word.
