EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the image of Isaac Barrow, a prominent 17th-century English classical scholar, theologian, and mathematician. Taken from the book Old Englands Worthies in approximately 1850, this portrait showcases Barrow's intellectual prowess and influential role in academia. Barrow (1630-1677) held various prestigious positions throughout his career. He served as the teacher of none other than Isaac Newton himself and became the Lucasian professor of mathematics at Cambridge University in 1663. However, he resigned from this post in 1669 to make way for Newton's remarkable talents. In addition to his mathematical achievements, Barrow was appointed Master of Trinity College, Cambridge in 1672. His dedication to education is further evidenced by his founding of its library – a testament to his commitment to expanding knowledge within the academic community. This engraving provides us with a glimpse into the life and accomplishments of an extraordinary man who made significant contributions not only to mathematics but also theology and classical scholarship. As we admire this portrait, we are reminded of Barrow's lasting impact on both his students and the field he dedicated his life to.
