Forest Stream with Vista, 1872. Creator: Asher Brown Durand (American, 1796-1886)
Forest Stream with Vista, 1872. Durand began his career as a bank-note engraver, but was inspired by the example of Thomas Cole to turn to landscape painting. Along with Cole he is considered the most important master of the " first generation" of Hudson River School painters. From his experience as an engraver, Durand was accustomed to close, detailed work. The most notable feature of his style was his ability to capture the varied textures of stone, moss, tree trunks, water, and other natural forms. Many of his paintings, such as this one, resemble bank notes in their composition, and contain a central oval scene that is surrounded on all sides by varied tonalities of green

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Forest Stream with Vista, 1872" by Asher Brown Durand showcases the remarkable talent of one of America's most influential landscape painters. Durand, initially an engraver for bank-notes, found his true calling in capturing the beauty of nature on canvas, inspired by Thomas Cole and becoming a prominent figure within the Hudson River School movement. Durand's meticulous attention to detail shines through in this piece as he skillfully depicts the various textures found in nature - from the roughness of stone and tree trunks to the softness of moss and flowing water. The composition itself resembles that of a bank note, with a central oval scene surrounded by lush tonalities of green that create a sense of depth and tranquility. The Forest Stream with Vista transports viewers into an idyllic woodland setting where they can almost hear the gentle babbling sound of water cascading over rocks. It is a testament to Durand's ability to capture not only visual beauty but also evoke emotions associated with being immersed in such serene surroundings.
