EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Last Effort and Fall of Tippoo Sultan (1799)" captures a significant moment in history during the mid-19th century. The artwork, created by Walker, depicts the death of Tippoo Sahib, the Sultan of Mysore, at his stronghold in Seringapatam. British forces had besieged the city and successfully stormed it on May 4th, 1799. This victory marked the end of the short fourth Anglo-Mysore War and allowed the British to gain control over Southern India. Ultimately, this conquest led to British rule throughout India. The image showcases a scene filled with intense fighting and portrays soldiers in military uniforms engaged in battle. The print evokes a sense of defeat as Tippoo Sultan is shown succumbing to his adversaries. It highlights both the power struggle between Britain and India during that time period and the impact it had on shaping history. Through its monochrome aesthetic, this engraving emphasizes key elements such as royalty, war tactics, and location. This historical artifact serves as a reminder of an important chapter in Indian history when foreign powers sought dominance over vast territories.
