Computer room, Huntsman House, Tetleys brewers headquarters, Leeds, West Yorkshire, 1968

Computer room, Huntsman House, Tetleys brewers headquarters, Leeds, West Yorkshire, 1968. The Tetley familys links with the beer industry reach back into the 1740s when William Tetley was described as a maltster in Armley. His son William then expanded the business, and it was then passed to his son Joshua. The original brewery was opened on the south banks of the river Aire in Leeds in 1822 and by the late 2000s 200 million pints of beer were being brewed on the site every year. Tetleys were taken over in 1998 by Danish brewers Carlsberg. In 2008, citing falling demand for beer as the reason, they announced plans to close the Leeds brewery in 2011 and move production to Northampton

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling computer room at Huntsman House, the headquarters of Tetleys brewers in Leeds, West Yorkshire in 1968. The Tetley family's rich history in the beer industry dates back to the 1740s when William Tetley was known as a maltster in Armley. Over generations, the business expanded under his son William and eventually passed on to Joshua. In 1822, they opened their original brewery along the south banks of the river Aire in Leeds. By 1968, this iconic computer room played a crucial role in managing operations and production at Tetleys. The image showcases a snapshot of life inside an office during that era – men and women dressed smartly for work with fashionable hairstyles and attire reflecting the style of the time. However, despite its historical significance and success over centuries, changes were on the horizon for Tetleys. In 1998, Danish brewers Carlsberg acquired them. Then, due to declining demand for beer by 2008, plans were announced to close down this very brewery by 2011 and move production elsewhere. This photograph serves as a reminder not only of how far technology has come since then but also highlights an important chapter in British brewing history. It encapsulates both tradition and progress within one frame - showcasing workers diligently carrying out their desk jobs amidst rows of computers while representing an era where manual labor began transitioning into automated processes through computing technology.
