The monastery of Rousanos

The monastery of Rousanos in the region of Meteora in Central Greece. These huge monoliths are a very rare geological phenomenon.During the period between 11th and 14th century, on the top of these rocks, the Greek monks built 24 monasteries, in order to be protected from the bandits and pirates. Until the 20th century, monks, pilgrims and supplies reached the monastery only by means of rope-ladders or by a big basket coming up and down by a winch mechanism manipulated by the monks on top

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring beauty of the monastery of Rousanos in the region of Meteora, Central Greece. The towering monoliths that surround this ancient structure are a rare geological phenomenon, making it an extraordinary sight to behold. Dating back to the 11th and 14th centuries, this monastery was strategically built on top of these rocks by Greek monks seeking protection from bandits and pirates. Accessing the monastery was no easy feat; until the 20th century, monks, pilgrims, and supplies could only reach their destination through rope-ladders or a large basket operated by a winch mechanism manipulated by the monks themselves. The image showcases not only the architectural marvel of this historic site but also its integration with nature. A solitary tree stands tall amidst rocky formations while lush grass carpets the surrounding area. Bathed in sunlight, this scene evokes a sense of tranquility and spirituality. Recognized as an international landmark and designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this photograph encapsulates both history and culture. It serves as a testament to Greek Orthodox religion and its deep-rooted connection with nature. Karolos Trivizas has masterfully captured all these elements in his photography, allowing viewers to experience firsthand the grandeur and significance of this remarkable place in Greece's rich heritage.
