EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a powerful moment in history, titled "Scene of surprise of the xciv regiment, 1881". Taken by an unknown photographer in the 19th century, this print is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. The image depicts a scene from the Transvaal War (1880-1881) in South Africa. In November 1880, the 94th Regiment was stationed in Pretoria when they were unexpectedly ambushed. On December 20th at Bronkhorstspruit, their column found itself surrounded by a significantly larger Boer force. The consequences were devastating for Lieutenant-Colonel P R Anstruther, who commanded the regiment. He suffered severe wounds to his thigh and succumbed to shock six days later following amputation. The attack was so swift and brutal that within just thirty minutes, numerous officers and soldiers had been shot down, forcing the surrender of the entire 94th Regiment. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during times of conflict and highlights both bravery and tragedy on both sides of war. Preserved for generations to come thanks to Bridgeman Images' efforts with Fine Art Finder, it allows us to reflect upon historical events that shaped our world today.
