Captain Henry Osborn (1697-1771), 1743-44 (oil on canvas)

7338007 Captain Henry Osborn (1697-1771), 1743-44 (oil on canvas) by Arnulphy, Claude (1697-1786); 91.5x71 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Claude Arnulphy
A half-length portrait slightly to right in a blue coat edged with gold lace, and with a gold-laced mariner's cuffs and a red waistcoat, also laced, and a grey tie-wig. Osborn's right hand rests on a box compass, while his left hand lacks cuffs and appears unfinished as does the background of sea, which has no shipping. The portrait was probably painted on board his ship Princess Caroline, 80 guns, in Hyeres Bay, when the fleet was blockading Toulon. At the ensuing but indecisive Battle of Toulon in 1744, Osborn commanded the Princess Caroline in the main division, and nobly supported Captain William Rowley. The fact that the fleet left after the action probably explains why Arnulphy was unable to finish this picture. Later he became an Admiral of the White.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait print captures the distinguished figure of Captain Henry Osborn, a prominent naval officer from the 18th century. Painted by Claude Arnulphy in 1743-44, this oil on canvas piece showcases Osborn in his full regalia aboard his ship 'Princess Caroline', during the blockade of Toulon. Osborn is depicted wearing a blue coat adorned with intricate gold lace detailing, along with a red waistcoat and a grey tie-wig. His right hand rests casually on a box compass, exuding an air of confidence and authority. The background of the painting features a serene sea backdrop without any ships, hinting at the unfinished nature of this work due to the fleet's departure after the Battle of Toulon. Known for his valor and leadership skills, Osborn played a crucial role in commanding the 'Princess Caroline' during this historic battle alongside Captain William Rowley. Despite its incomplete state, this portrait serves as a timeless tribute to Osborn's contributions to British naval history. Now housed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this artwork offers viewers a glimpse into the life and legacy of one of Britain's esteemed naval officers. Admirers of maritime history and art alike will appreciate this exquisite portrayal of Captain Henry Osborn by Claude Arnulphy.
