EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Plate 30 and 31 of the historic Entry of Pope Clement VII and Emperor Charles V into Bologna on February 24,1530. The engraving, created by Flemish artist Nicholas Hogenberg around the same time, captures a momentous event in European history. In this image, we witness the grand procession as Pope Clement VII bestows upon Emperor Charles V the title of Holy Roman Emperor. The scene is filled with an air of triumph and celebration as horse-mounted figures lead the way through Bologna's streets. Flaming trumpets pierce through the air, announcing their arrival to all who bear witness. Banners flutter proudly above as horns blare in harmony with trumpet sounds. A retinue follows closely behind, adding to the spectacle with their regal presence. The city is adorned for this joyous occasion; its people eagerly await their crowned rulers. Notably, Charles V was bestowed this honor by Pope Clement VII himself - a significant detail that sets him apart from his predecessors. This papal coronation marked a turning point in history since it would be the last time an emperor received such recognition from a pope. Nicholas Hogenberg skillfully captured every detail of this monumental event in his engraving - from drummers rhythmically beating their drums to knights brandishing lances high above them. Through this photo print, we are transported back to that day when two powerful leaders converged in Bologna amidst great fanfare and celebration.
