EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic St Nicholas Church in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Painted by Robert Johnson in the late 18th century, this ink and watercolor masterpiece showcases the church's soaring tower, adorned with intricate details that have made it a focal point of the town for centuries. Originally built during the 14th and 15th centuries, St Nicholas Church received cathedral status in 1882 when Newcastle became a city. The artist has skillfully depicted an early morning scene at Cloth Market, one of Newcastle's bustling open street markets. The stalls are yet to be set up for trading, allowing Johnson to showcase his main subject - the magnificent St Nicholas Church - without any obstruction. The painting not only highlights the architectural beauty of this historic landmark but also provides a glimpse into daily life during that time period. It is evident from the empty market square that soon it will be filled with bustling activity as people move between Tyne Bridge and Newgate. Displayed at Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne today, this artwork serves as a testament to both Johnson's artistic talent and his appreciation for capturing significant moments in history through his brushstrokes.
