An Afghan and two soldiers pose in the foreground of this view of the upper Bala Hissar in Kabul. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the south face of Upper Bala Hissar in Kabul, taken in 1879 by John Burke during the Second Afghan War. In the foreground, an Afghan civilian and two soldiers strike a pose, adding a human element to this historic image. The upper section of the fortress served as an armoury and dungeons, while the lower fort housed royal palaces, stables, and barracks. However, this once majestic structure suffered destruction at the hands of British forces seeking revenge for the death of Sir Louis Cavagnari and his escort. From an album containing 101 photographs by John Burke, this particular snapshot offers a glimpse into both civilian life and military presence within Afghanistan's topography during that era. The photograph showcases not only Burke's skill as a photographer but also his ability to capture significant moments in history. Now part of the National Army Museum collection in London, this image provides viewers with a window into Kabul's past. It serves as a reminder of how photography can preserve important cultural heritage for future generations to appreciate.
