EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to witness a tender moment between two historical figures, George Washington and Mary Philipse. The illustration, originally featured in Woodrow Wilson's book "Colonel Washington" transports us to the late 18th century. In this scene, we find the young George Washington, known for his leadership during the American Revolution and later as the first President of the United States. However, here he is depicted not as a military commander or statesman but rather as a man deeply in love. Sitting on a window seat with Mary Philipse by his side, their eyes meet affectionately while they engage in playful flirting. The image captures an intimate connection between these two individuals who were said to be each other's first loves. It offers us a glimpse into Washington's early career before he became an iconic figure in American history. The lithographic technique used by Howard Pyle beautifully brings out the details of this romantic encounter. The shading and delicate lines create depth and emotion within the composition. As part of the Brandywine School movement, Pyle was renowned for his ability to capture historical scenes with great accuracy and artistic flair. This particular piece showcases his talent for storytelling through visual artistry. Overall, this print serves as a reminder that even legendary figures like George Washington had personal lives filled with love and longing – moments that are often overshadowed by their public achievements.
