EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving from the 19th century takes us back to the XIII Siecle, during the reign of Louis IX, also known as Saint Louis. The image depicts a brave and noble Sergent d'Arme, a sergeant-at-arms, dressed in his distinctive armor and armed with weaponry of that era. This exquisite artwork is part of a private collection. The engraving was created by an anonymous French artist and was originally published as an illustration for "Costumes Francais depuis Clovis jusqu'a nos jours" (French Costumes from Clovis to Present Day) by A Mifliez in 1835. It offers us a glimpse into the fashion and appearance of that historical period. Louis IX, who ruled France from 1214 to 1270, belonged to the Capetian dynasty and is widely regarded as one of France's greatest kings. Known for his piety and justice, he earned the title "Saint Louis" after his death. Through this remarkable print, we are transported back in time to witness not only the intricate details of medieval French attire but also gain insight into European history during this significant period. The image showcases both defensive armaments used by infantry soldiers at that time and highlights France's cultural influence within Europe. This extraordinary piece serves as a testament to both artistic skill and historical documentation while allowing us to appreciate the rich heritage left behind by King Louis IX.
