EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph takes us back in time to the grandeur of The High Saloon at Castle Howard, Yorkshire. Captured by an English photographer from the 20th century, this print is a remarkable piece from Giles Worsley's book "England's Lost Houses" published in 2002. The High Saloon, built between 1699 and 1712 by Sir John Vanbrugh and Nicholas Hawksmoor for the 3rd Earl of Carlisle, showcases exquisite rococo decoration and plasterwork that once adorned its walls. The interior decor exudes opulence and elegance, transporting viewers to a bygone era of stately homes. The focal point of this image lies in the ceiling painting that graces the room with its intricate beauty. Sadly, much of Castle Howard was devastated by fire in 1940; however, this photograph predates that tragic event. It captures wall paintings by Pellegrini which were later covered up but ultimately lost forever due to the fire. Through this photograph, we are granted a glimpse into a world filled with grandeur and artistic marvels. It serves as a testament to both the skillful craftsmanship of architects like Vanbrugh and Hawksmoor and also as a reminder of how fragile our architectural heritage can be. Bridgeman Images has preserved this extraordinary moment in history through their fine art collection on Fine Art Finder. This print allows us to appreciate not only the talent behind capturing such beauty but also reminds us
