St Francis Xavier, accompanied by two priests and a Japanese convert named Paul Saint Foy, arrived on the shores of Kagoshima on the Feast of the Assumption. The Prince of Satsuma welcomed them initially, but opposition from native priests forced St Francis to leave after a year. The image depicts this pivotal event with intricate detail and emotion, showcasing the meeting between St Francis and the prince amidst a backdrop of cultural exchange and religious fervor. The artist, Walter Frederick Roofe Tyndale, skillfully brings to life this significant chapter in history through his masterful use of lithography. As we gaze upon this print, we are transported back in time to witness the clash of traditions and beliefs that defined this era. The expressions on the faces of those present convey a sense of tension and intrigue as alliances are formed and broken.
