Cosmetic Vessel, c. 1980-1901 BC (anhydrite)

499983 Cosmetic Vessel, c.1980-1901 BC (anhydrite)
by Egyptian 12th Dynasty (1991-1786 BC); d:7 h:6.8 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: Both ancient Egyptian men and women loved cosmetics. Unguents, oils, and perfumes made from aromatic plant resins and gums were obtained at great cost from distant lands. The objects identified with cosmetics were given lavish treatment. The luxurious obsidian and gold beaker hints at the precious contents it once held. Others are fanciful in form, such as an ostrich egg. The god Bes, patron god of cosmetics, himself is the subject of a colorful jar. The delicately carved human face and the head of a giraffe decorated elaborate ivory cosmetic spoons.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable artifact from ancient Egypt, known as the "Cosmetic Vessel". Created during the 12th Dynasty (1991-1786 BC), this anhydrite vessel stands at a height of 7 cm and has intricate carvings that highlight its exquisite craftsmanship. In ancient Egyptian culture, cosmetics held great significance for both men and women. This vessel would have once contained precious unguents, oils, or perfumes made from aromatic plant resins and gums obtained from distant lands at considerable expense. The lavish treatment given to objects associated with cosmetics is evident in this piece. The luxurious obsidian and gold beaker featured in the photograph hints at the valuable contents it once held. Other vessels depicted are more fanciful in form, such as an ostrich egg or a colorful jar depicting the god Bes, who was revered as the patron god of cosmetics. Additionally, attention is drawn to delicate ivory cosmetic spoons adorned with intricately carved human faces and giraffe heads. These spoons exemplify the meticulous artistry employed by ancient Egyptians when crafting their cosmetic tools. Through this print captured by Bridgeman Images, viewers can admire not only the beauty of these artifacts but also gain insight into how cosmetics played a significant role in ancient Egyptian society's daily rituals and cultural practices.
