Crested Pigeons - pair wait near a bird feeder for their early morning feed.
Endemic to Australia.
Ocyphaps lophotes
Once found mainly in the more-arid regions of the Australian outback, this species is now expanding its range towards the coast and is a popular inhabitant in many of the larger towns and cities. When startled the birds fly off with a characteristic whistling sound, generated by specially modified primary feathers in each wing. (NOTE: Often erroneously called Topknot Pigeon, but this name belongs to the rainforest species Lopholaimus antarcticus, mainly an arboreal feeder.)

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this stunning print by Eric Lindgren, a pair of Crested Pigeons can be seen waiting near a bird feeder for their early morning feed. Endemic to Australia, these birds were once mainly found in the arid regions of the outback but are now expanding their range towards the coast.
Known for their distinctive crest and iridescent plumage, Crested Pigeons have become popular inhabitants in many towns and cities across Australia. When startled, they take flight with a unique whistling sound produced by specially modified feathers on their wings.
It's important to note that despite being commonly referred to as Topknot Pigeons, this name actually belongs to a different species found in rainforests. The Crested Pigeon is easily recognizable by its brown and grey coloring, red eye ring, and spike-like claws on its feet.
This image captures the beauty and grace of these widespread birds as they go about their daily routine. Prints like these are perfect for personal display purposes only and should not be reproduced without permission. Let this pair of Crested Pigeons bring a touch of Australian wildlife into your home or office space.
