EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling construction scene of the New South Wales Motorway in Nr Chiswick, London. Taken on August 4th, 1963, the image showcases the impressive progress made in this building programme. The view looks east along the Great West Road near Chiswick, revealing a glimpse of what is to come. The focal point of this snapshot is undoubtedly the motorway itself. Made entirely of pre-cast concrete, it stands as a testament to modern engineering marvels. The section depicted here stretches from Chiswick to Langley and can be seen gracefully elevated above ground level on sturdy stilts. These stilts not only support its weight but also serve as an architectural feature that adds visual interest to the landscape. On either side of this central structure are additional stilts eagerly awaiting their purpose - they will soon become home to "Feed In" roads that will connect seamlessly with the main motorway. This comprehensive design ensures smooth traffic flow and accessibility for motorists using these new roadways. Overall, this photograph encapsulates both progress and anticipation. It serves as a historical record showcasing how infrastructure development was reshaping London's urban landscape during this era. As we gaze upon this remarkable image today, we cannot help but appreciate the vision and effort invested in forging ahead with such an ambitious building programme over half a century ago.
