EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the grandeur of the Interior of Norfolk Market Hall in Sheffield, captured in 1862. The focal point of this bustling market hall was a magnificent fountain made from Green Moor stone, standing proudly at its center. Surrounding this centerpiece were approximately fifty shops, neatly divided along the sides and ends of the market. To facilitate easy access for shoppers, double ranges of stalls ran down the middle, creating four distinct avenues within the market. The credit for this architectural marvel goes to Henry Charles, 13th Duke of Norfolk who commissioned its construction on the site formerly occupied by Tontine Inn. Opening its doors to eager patrons in 1851, Norfolk Market Hall quickly became a vibrant hub where locals gathered to buy and sell an array of goods. Sadly, despite being cherished by generations for over a century, this iconic landmark met its demise in 1959 when it was demolished. However, thanks to Sheffield Libraries' archives and their preservation efforts, we can still admire and appreciate this historical gem through this original photograph (s01865). As we gaze upon this image capturing a moment frozen in time, we are transported back to an era when Norfolk Market Hall thrived as Sheffield's bustling commercial heart - forever etched into our collective memory.
