TEM of human white blood cell bearing HLA antigen

False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a human white blood cell (bottom), showing presence of an HLA antigen (human leucocyte antigen), which appears as uneven red areas on exterior suface of the cell. The HLA antigens arise from a gene cluster on chromosome 6 in humans, which is referred to as the Major Histocompatability Complex (MHC). This title arose through studies on graft rejection in mice, where matched groups of antigens in donor & recipient animals markedly improved graft survival. In addition, it is now recognized that HLA antigens are involved in many other immunological processes. Magnification: X 8, 800 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-color transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a human white blood cell, with an emphasis on the presence of HLA antigens. These unique antigens, part of the human leucocyte antigen system, are depicted as striking red areas scattered unevenly across the cell's exterior surface. The HLA antigens originate from a gene cluster located on chromosome 6 in humans, known as the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC). Originally discovered through studies on graft rejection in mice, where matching donor and recipient antigens significantly improved transplant success rates, these HLA antigens have since been found to play crucial roles in various immunological processes. They act as key players in our immune system's ability to recognize self from non-self and contribute to immune responses against pathogens. At an impressive magnification level of X 8,800 at 35mm size, this TEM image provides us with an intricate glimpse into the complex world within our bodies. It highlights not only the fascinating anatomy and functioning of white blood cells but also sheds light on how our immune system operates at a cellular level. Captured by Science Photo Library, this remarkable photograph serves as a reminder of the incredible intricacies that make up our body's defense mechanisms and invites us to marvel at their beauty and functionality.
