Stromatolite fossil

Stromatolite fossil cut away to reveal the internal concentric banding. Stromatolites are large, stony, cushion-like masses, composed of numerous layers of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) which have been preserved due to their ability to secrete calcium carbonate. They are among the oldest organic remains to have been found, the oldest structures dating from over 3000 million years ago. Stromatolite formation reached a peak during the late Precambrian period, but is still occuring today. Present-day formations can be seen in the Everglades, Florida, USA, and in Shark Bay, Australia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable Stromatolite fossil, offering us a glimpse into the ancient world. The fossil has been delicately cut away to reveal its mesmerizing internal concentric banding, unveiling the intricate layers of cyanobacteria that once thrived within it. Stromatolites are truly awe-inspiring structures; they resemble large, stony cushion-like masses and are composed of countless layers of blue-green algae known as cyanobacteria. These fascinating organisms possess the extraordinary ability to secrete calcium carbonate, which ultimately led to their preservation over millions of years. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are transported back in time as these fossils date back over an astonishing 3000 million years ago. They represent some of the oldest organic remains ever discovered on Earth. Although Stromatolite formation peaked during the late Precambrian period, it is incredible to note that this process still occurs today. In fact, present-day formations can be observed in two distinct locations: the Everglades in Florida, USA and Shark Bay in Australia. These modern-day counterparts serve as living testaments to our planet's rich geological history. This breathtaking image not only highlights the beauty and complexity of nature but also serves as a reminder of how life has evolved throughout millennia. It is through such scientific marvels captured by Science Photo Library that we gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for our planet's ancient past.
