EDITORS COMMENTS
This wood engraving, dating back to circa 1888, showcases the esteemed French naturalist Rene Antoine Ferchault de Reaumur (1683-1757). Known for his remarkable contributions to various scientific fields, Reaumur's legacy continues to inspire and educate generations of researchers. Originally a mathematician with a keen interest in geometry, Reaumur was commissioned in 1710 to compile an extensive record of France's natural and industrial resources. This endeavor played a pivotal role in reviving the iron and steel industries within the country. Reaumur's most notable achievement came through his groundbreaking work on insects. His comprehensive scientific masterpiece titled "Memoires pour servir a l'histoire des insects" (1734-42) remains one of the first significant studies on these fascinating creatures. In this monumental work, he not only shed light on their intricate biology but also revolutionized our understanding of animal digestion by proving it to be a chemical process rather than mechanical. Moreover, Reaumur demonstrated his ingenuity by inventing an egg incubator and revealing that corals are indeed animals. To honor his immense contributions, a temperature scale was named after him – the Réaumur scale – which became widely used during that era. This monochrome engraving captures the essence of Rene de Reaumur as both a brilliant scientist and an influential figure in French history. It serves as a testament to his tireless dedication towards unraveling nature's mysteries while leaving an indelible mark on entomology, physics, biology, and industry alike.
