EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of the Monitor Lizard Tick (Amblyomma exornatum, formerly Aponomma exornatum). Native to Africa, this remarkable arachnid is primarily a parasite of monitor lizards. Against a striking black background, the image highlights its unique features and mesmerizing patterns. However, beyond its aesthetic appeal lies a crucial role in nature's delicate balance. This tick serves as a vector for Ehrlichia ruminantium bacteria, previously known as Cowdria ruminantium. These bacteria are responsible for causing heartwater disease—a significant threat to both domestic and wild ruminants. The photograph provides an opportunity to delve into the fascinating world of zoology and biology. It invites us to explore the complex relationships between species and their environments. As an ecto parasite, this tick exemplifies how certain organisms rely on others for survival while inadvertently spreading diseases that can have devastating consequences. Science Photo Library has masterfully captured this single specimen against a black backdrop, allowing us to appreciate its intricate details without distractions. The precision cut-out enhances our focus on this intriguing creature's morphology and behavior. Let this extraordinary image transport you into the realm of wildlife exploration—where science meets art—and where every organism plays an essential role in shaping our natural world.
