Martian microfossil, SEM
Evidence for life on Mars. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a tube-like structure (coloured yellow) on a meteorite which originated from Mars. Structures such as this have been interpreted as possibly being microfossils of primitive, bacteria-like organisms which may have lived on Mars more than 3.6 billion years ago. The structures are less than 1/100th the diameter of a human hair. The meteorite, called ALH84001, was discovered in Antarctica in 1984, and has since been studied at NASAs Johnson Space Center and at Stanford University

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of evidence that has ignited the imagination of scientists worldwide - a Martian microfossil. In this colored scanning electron micrograph, we are presented with a tube-like structure, painted in vibrant yellow hues, found on a meteorite originating from Mars. These minuscule structures, measuring less than 1/100th the diameter of a human hair, have been interpreted as potential microfossils belonging to primitive bacteria-like organisms that might have thrived on the Red Planet over 3.6 billion years ago. The meteorite in question is named ALH84001 and was fortuitously discovered in Antarctica back in 1984. Since then, it has undergone extensive scrutiny at NASA's Johnson Space Center and Stanford University. This extraordinary finding fuels our curiosity about extraterrestrial life and propels us further into the realm of astrobiology and exobiology. As we gaze upon this image, we cannot help but ponder the possibility that life once existed beyond Earth's boundaries. The tantalizing prospect of ancient Martian organisms invites us to contemplate humanity's place within an expansive universe teeming with mysteries waiting to be unraveled. Science Photo Library presents this awe-inspiring photograph as part of their collection dedicated to scientific exploration and discovery. It serves as both an emblematic representation of our ongoing quest for knowledge about alien worlds and an inspiration for future research endeavors aimed at unraveling the enigma surrounding life on Mars.
