Macrophoto of Anopheles balabacensis, a mosquito

Macrophotograph of a female mosquito Anopheles balabacensis, vector of East Indian malaria, seen here feeding on blood from a human arm. The female mosquito carries the parasitic protozoa of the genus Plasmodium, which is the cause of the infectious disease malaria. The protozoa is picked up during feeding from the blood of an infected person. It multiplies in the mosquitos stomach & migrates to the salivary glands. When the mosquito feeds again the parasite is passed into the bloodstream of the host. This mosquito is seen with its proboscis penetrating the skin & blood flowing up the tubes. A drop of serum is secreted from its anus. Magnification: x5 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This macrophoto captures the intricate details of Anopheles balabacensis, a female mosquito known for its role as a vector of East Indian malaria. The image showcases the mosquito in action, feeding on blood from a human arm. The female mosquito is not only seeking nourishment but also unknowingly carrying the parasitic protozoa of the genus Plasmodium, which causes the devastating infectious disease malaria. During her feeding process, she acquires these parasites from an infected person's blood and they multiply within her stomach before migrating to her salivary glands. In this photo, we witness the moment when the mosquito's proboscis penetrates through human skin while blood flows up its tiny tubes. As if that weren't intriguing enough, a drop of serum can be seen secreted from its anus. With a magnification level of x5 at 35mm size, this print allows us to appreciate both the beauty and complexity found within nature's smallest creatures. It serves as a reminder of how interconnected our world truly is and highlights the importance of understanding and combating diseases like malaria. This mesmerizing snapshot falls under various scientific disciplines such as zoology, entomology (the study of insects), and epidemiology (the study of diseases). Its significance extends beyond aesthetics; it holds valuable information for researchers striving to combat one of humanity's greatest health challenges – malaria caused by Anopheles balabacensis mosquitoes.
