Eroded statue
Eroded statue. Stone statue that has been damaged by acid rain. Acid rain is caused by the reaction in the atmosphere between water droplets and pollutant gases, notably sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen, which are mainly produced by the burning of fossil fuels. Such reactions lead to the production of sulphuric acid and nitric acid which are brought down in the rain, increasing the acidity of soil and water in rivers and lakes. Statues are eroded by the acid depositions and many of Europes older buildings are decaying at an accelerated rate

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the devastating effects of acid rain on a once majestic stone statue. The eroded statue stands as a solemn reminder of the detrimental impact that human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels, have on our environment. Acid rain occurs when water droplets in the atmosphere react with pollutant gases like sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen, resulting in the formation of sulphuric acid and nitric acid. These acidic compounds are then brought down by rainfall, increasing soil and water acidity. The erosion caused by these acid depositions is clearly visible on this weathered sculpture, which serves as a poignant symbol of how Europe's older buildings are rapidly decaying due to this environmental phenomenon. As we gaze upon this solitary figure against a natural backdrop, we cannot help but reflect on the consequences of air pollution and climate change. This thought-provoking image not only highlights the destructive power of acid rain but also emphasizes the urgent need for sustainable practices to protect our wildlife and environment. It reminds us that each individual has a role to play in mitigating climate change and preserving our planet for future generations. Let it serve as an inspiration for collective action towards creating a cleaner, greener world where statues stand tall without succumbing to erosion caused by human-induced atmospheric changes.
